Spillane used religious rituals, purporting to perform exorcisms, prayers and to speak in tongues, as a ruse to sexually abuse the boys.
"He knew that most of these complainants were desperately homesick and offered them comfort only to sexually abuse them," Judge Robyn Tupman✓ said.
"He knew he could act with impunity and with almost no chance that his behaviour would be revealed."
Spillane was found guilty of 16 charges, including sexual assault, indecent assault and buggery, relating to attacks on several boys between 1974 and 1990. The boys were aged between 12 and 15 and were either boarders or day students at the school.
"It is unlikely that there was not one person at St Stanislaus that had not noticed what this offender had been doing for almost 20 years," Judge Tupman✓ said
Justice wouldn’t be done until the school was investigated by a Royal Commission.
“There is a real wrong there that needs to be fixed,”
“The only way this will be over for me is if the school is investigated by the Royal Commission, but until that happens, it won’t end.
“Someone needs to look at how there were (so many) paedophiles there, work out how that happened and who is responsible.
“People at the school knew all those years ago what was going on, and they did nothing,”
“Heroes are flawed people; they don’t go by the rules, they are on the outside looking in,”
“Every one of those 160 men are heroes, as is Justin Hadley (the officer in charge of the investigation),”
